Pick a moment with a beginning and an end

Try a small creative challenge this weekend: tell a story in five shots. Choose something easy to film, such as packing a bag for an outing, arranging an outfit or getting ready for a movie night. Keep the action simple enough to finish in one room.

Plan your five shots

For a “ready for movie night” story, your list could be:

  1. The place: a wide view of the room before anyone settles in.
  2. The detail: a close view of a snack bowl or a handwritten watchlist.
  3. The action: someone placing cushions or dimming a lamp.
  4. The change: a hand puts the phone away and reaches for the remote.
  5. The ending: everyone settles into their seats, ready to watch.

You can tell the same story without faces: hands, objects and changes in the room can carry the action. If friends appear, check that they are comfortable being filmed and with wherever you intend to share the result.

Choose a frame and stay with it

Film vertically or horizontally for this exercise, then keep that choice consistent. Rest your phone on a stable surface when possible. Record a little before and after each action so you have room to choose the beginning and end of the shot.

Edit for the story

Use an editor you already know to put the clips in order. Cut away the waiting around. Watch the sequence without music first: can you understand what changed? If the ending feels unclear, try a stronger final shot before adding effects.

Give it one thoughtful finishing touch

Add a short title, retain useful room sounds, or use music you have permission to include. Avoid filming the movie itself; your story is about the evening around it. Show the result to a friend and ask which moment they remember. Use that answer to plan your next tiny film.
